Vancouver-based Eldorado Gold is pursuing its Skouries project - a processing plant and open pit gold mine near the town of Ierissos in the Halkidiki peninsula of northern Greece - which is set to open by 2015. It is also seeking to open the Perama Hill mine in the Thrace region of Greece.
Three people from Greece will be visiting Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto later this month to share information and their stories about why they oppose these mines. The speakers on this 3-city speaking tour are Vaggelis Lampakis (the mayor of Alexandroupoli in the Thrace region) and activists Tolis Papageorgiou and Maria Kadoglou (from the Halkidiki peninsula). In early-March, Kadoglou spoke against the Skouries project on CBC Radio’s As It Happens. In late-March, Mayor Lampakis challenged the Canadian ambassador to Greece about the Perama Hill mine.
